We want you to love the mountains as much as we do.

From Our Hearts to the Mountains: The Story Behind Elk & Embers
By Kristina & Susan, Co-Founders of Elk & Embers

Elk & Embers started as a dream—one that came to life around the same fires that inspired our name. As two women who’ve spent years exploring the Great Smoky Mountains with our families, we always knew there was something magical here: the stillness, the wildlife, the space to slow down and reconnect. We wanted to build something that honored that magic, something that felt like coming home to the outdoors. That’s how Elk & Embers was born.

How It All Began

We’re Kristina and Susan: Decades-long friends, creatives, and now co-founders. Our vision for Elk & Embers grew out of a shared love for nature, intentional design, and meaningful hospitality. When it came time to name this special place, we kept coming back to the two things that truly move us: the elk, a powerful and graceful symbol of the Appalachian landscape, and the embers of a glowing campfire, where stories are shared and memories made. One day, Susan said it out loud—Elk & Embers—and we both just knew that was it.

A Family Effort

This project is close to our hearts, and it’s also a family affair. Our husbands, Glenn and Matt, have been deeply involved behind the scenes—designing, building, problem-solving, and supporting the vision every step of the way. It’s taken all of us, each bringing our own strengths and perspectives, to turn this dream into a real place where people can feel held by nature.

Designing with Intention

Every decision we make at Elk & Embers is rooted in intention. From the placement of our luxury glamping tents, cabins and treehouse to the materials we’ve chosen, we’ve worked to ensure each space is beautiful, sustainable, and in harmony with the land. We want guests to feel connected—to nature, to their loved ones, and to themselves. That’s why we’ve taken extra care to create a sense of quiet luxury—one that soothes rather than distracts.

What We Hope You’ll Feel Here

To us, Elk & Embers isn’t just a resort or retreat—it’s a place to exhale. Whether you’re stargazing by the fire, listening to the breeze move through the trees, or simply sipping coffee on the porch at sunrise, our hope is that you’ll feel the same peace and presence we’ve felt on this land. We created this space to offer a gentle pause from the rush of everyday life, a space where you can truly just be.

Gratitude & What’s Next

We’re so grateful for the support we’ve received from our community and the American Glamping Association, who recently featured our story in their Member Spotlight. As we continue to grow and welcome new guests to Elk & Embers, we remain guided by the same values we started with: authenticity, connection, and a deep respect for nature.

Thank you for being part of our journey. We can’t wait to welcome you to the mountains.

With warmth,
Kristina & Susan
